Our not-so-little little guy is thirteen months old today!!!
I was waiting until I had his weight and all of that stuff before I did his twelve months post, then we had to postpone his party, then I was busy doing party stuff, then he was sick, and so on. Life is busy. So, now he's thirteen months already. It's all happening so quickly, especially having one child in school and all of the things that go along with that- homework, reading, field trips, school functions, birthday parties, making cupcakes for this or that, etc. I really underestimated just how much there is to do with a school-aged kid. I guess I could choose to be less involved, but that's just not me. So, Hudson and Andrew are laid-back in nature and out of necessity!
So, on February 15 ( almost three weeks after he was twelve months), I finally got around to taking him for his check-up. He was 28 pounds 4 ounces and seems to be slowing down now that he is burning up some calories walking, and trying to run, around the house all day. That's the 95th percentile I think. His height is 33 1/4 inches. That is off the charts and the doctor commented on how long he had gotten so quickly.
He's doing all of the appropriate developmental milestones.
He's had a double ear infection, pink eye, and upper respiratory infection in the last month and had ear infections and a URI a couple of months ago too, but he dodged the flu that Hannah had the week before his birthday. We all did. I'm so happy about that. I guess being a "germophobe" by nature and RN by trade pays off sometimes. Tamiflu, I'm sure, made the most difference. Whatever the reason, which I know is really just God's grace and mercy upon us, I'm really grateful that my boys didn't get the flu too, especially on Andrew's birthday. We were thankful that everyone was well and we still got to have family visit for the occasion.
Andrew is busy, busy these days. He has a fondness for anything he's not supposed to have. He laughs and teases reaching for the remote knowing it is off-limits after he re-programmed the TV (it was off-limits before but I missed it this time). He will find and eat the chalk if the kids leave it out on their easel. He has done this several times. He seems to have radar for things that are a choking hazard. He especially LOVES hotwheel cars. I can't imagine the metal tastes very good, but he certainly doesn't mind it. This was such a problem that I had to move all of the small cars, and anything else that he could bite the wheels or parts off of, to our downstairs playroom if not just for my sanity.
Another favorite activity for the little guy is pulling the books out of the book basket in the living room. He loves to eat or make a mess of look at them. His favorite seems to be the Veggie Tales "Goody Good Glasses" book. He loves all of the glasses in the pictures. So funny.
And climbing up, on and over the footstool is a blast!
In the kitchen he likes to spend his time playing underneath his highchair.
That, and trying to invade my loading and unloading of the dishwasher.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that every household task takes more time these days. And it is time I seem to have so much less of.
All within a couple of weeks we stopped offering him the paci when he sleeps, switched to milk instead of formula, and made the transition to a sippy cup. No more bottles. And all of this while he is cutting all four molars and has bruised spots on every one. The top two have been blue for weeks. Poor guy. I wish these teeth would come in already. They really hurt him sometimes. I feel so bad for him. We really aren't being cruel making all of these changes at once. We figured out that he was tossing his pacis before he even settled to sleep, so we figured we might as well stop giving them to him. As for the sippy cup, he had started protesting his bottles and refused to finish a lot of them, so I figured a switch was in order. And if I was making a switch anyway why not try some milk? If he wasn't going to finish it anyway, why not? It turns out he loves milk. Even though he still isn't fond of drinking really cold liquids, he is doing awesome drinking milk. He finishes every cup now. And I got a large sippy cup with a very soft, slow-flowing silicone spout. The changes have been easy. He's a really good sport.
Oh, I have to share a cute thing he does now. When you go in and get him in the morning or after nap he laughs and dives from one end of the bed to another, kicking and even sometimes doing one leg in this bicycling-like movement. He usually tosses his stuffed animals around while he does this. He has to do this several times before you pick him up and gets upset if you try and pick him up too soon. He especially loves it if you add a tickle when he flips over. He is too funny!
Also, when he gets a bath, he immediately starts splashing aggressively the second he hits the water. It's so cute. He only stops when he gets too much water in his face, and then it's only to catch a breath.
Today as I was putting on his coat he said, "bye-bye". I hadn't said anything to him about leaving the house. Smart fella.
Andrew is going through a pretty major separation anxiety phase. Aside from his following me wherever I go in the house and being upset when I or Daddy leave or even if we have to walk downstairs or step out onto the porch, he screams.....constantly and without ceasing......when we try to leave him in the nursery at church. He doesn't even care that Hudson is in there too. He is not having it!
He does fine, though, when people watch him at our house. We just have to sneak out.
He is still protesting chunks of food and only really wants the pureed stuff. That is with the exception of his favorite fruit, banana. I got him to eat pieces of a banana the other day. He loved it and had no trouble at all. This is definitely an issue of preference.
He still takes a good nap during the day. It's better since I figured out that when he wakes up after an hour or so, if I leave him alone and let him cry for a few minutes, he will go back to sleep for a while longer. Glad I figured that out!
He screams every time we lay him down. We do the same thing we did with Hannah and Hudson, laid them down awake and they just went to sleep. No fussing. Well, not Andrew! This boy is very passionate about playing. He is very angry when we lay him down. He starts whining as soon as you walk him into his room. I'm hoping he grows out of this. Tonight, in an effort to settle him down and get him into sleep mode before laying him down, I tried rocking him in the dark and singing to him for about five minutes. He settled and started yawning and resting his head on my chest. I then laid him down........and then he screamed as usual for about 25 minutes before going to sleep. I'll be glad to see the end of this routine. It stinks to hear him cry like that, but going back in the room just delays the process with the same outcome.
| Andrew "photo-bombed" the picture of the Queen and King! |
That's all I can remember tonight. I hope I didn't forget anything I want to record.
It was a lot, though. He is a very busy and active one year old!
