New baby appointment and 1st ultrasound

June 22, 2011 post:

Today was my first OB appoinment. I asked around and think I've found a great doctor. He seems really nice and attentive. To back-track a little, the first few weeks of this pregnancy was a bit of a challenge. On the day of Hudson's birthday party I had a scare and thought something might be wrong. I've had several friends who have miscarried, and this day right in the middle of the party, I thought I could be one of them too. I think most of us women have that fear for a while that something could happen, and that day I was the most scared. It turns out I must have just done too much with the move-in just 9 days prior to the party and doing all of things that I did in preparation for the party. I had no more scary episodes after that day. I had made my appoinment for the 22nd, being that I was 8 weeks on that day, knowing most doctors would not do an ultrasound before 8 weeks. So, for 11 days I wondered, but rationalized that if something were really wrong I would certainly have more symptoms than I did. It was a long 11 days. Finally, the day came and I saw the doctor. I was disappointed to hear that at this office they usually do the first ultrasound at 12 weeks, not 8 weeks but given the scare I had, he agreed to do one that day to check things out. I was so glad! It was a wonderful, amazing feeling to see that baby on the screen and hear that little hearbeat! The baby looked great and measured 7wks and 4 days. The heartrate was strong at 164 beats per minute. It was lovely.
The technician did find, though, that I had a small (1.9cmx1.7cm) retrochorionic bleed in my uterus outside the baby's sac. Basically, when everything was forming a blood vessel broke off and has been bleeding slowly into the uterus. They say this most likely heals on it's own and is likely to cause no problems. Of course, I was still worried, especially after reading (darn internet!) about the risk of "bleeding the baby out." But, we trust that our mighty God will heal the bleed and protect our little one, continuing to knit this tiny miracle together in my womb safely until it's time to be born.
